Bright straw color. The floral nose delivers ample complex aromas of honeysuckle, sweet lemon, freshly cut pineapple and hints of vanilla and nuts. Fermented dry, the wine gains a viscous creamy edge in the mouth, a result of barrel fermentation. This is nicely balanced against a crisp acidity. An additional note of tangerine peel pops through after mid-palate. Chappellet is one of a small handful of California wineries dedicated to producing world-class Chenin Blanc. This pretty white is sure to please both wine newbies and enophiles alike.
MSRP: $32 (May 2013)

By Bob Johnson

Whether you prefer red, white, blush or bubbly… and whether you listen to rock, jazz, blues or country… two of the great joys of life are wine and music.

And when you can find a way to combine the two, well, that’s about as good as it gets.

Fortunately, the proprietors of a number of wineries understand this, and bring in talented musicians so that we can enjoy some songs with our Syrah… some tunes with our Tempranillo… some Albariño with our a cappella.

Some of the larger wineries, such as Chateau Ste. Michelle near Seattle and Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley, host national touring acts. The Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Calif., while still producing wine, is actually better defined as a concert venue — and an excellent one. Smaller wineries, with smaller budgets, typically bring in local bands or esteemed singer-songwriters. Regardless of the performers’ fame, the music just seems to sound better when you have a glass of your favorite wine in hand.

The big news on the wine-and-music scene this year is the opening of a new concert venue at the Vina Robles estate in Paso Robles, Calif. Tickets for the amphitheater’s debut season went on sale last week.

All across the country, wineries are gearing up for their summer seasons. At some, you can simply drop in, sit down and soak in the sounds. At others, tickets are required, and often sell out far in advance.

To help you plan a memorable wine-and-music experience, we’ve put together a handy, dandy guide to some of the wineries that host concerts during the summer months (and, in some cases, beyond). Check in on the winery websites (we’ve included links) every so often for updates.

Meanwhile, check out the seven tunes we’ve just added to our “Wine Songs” library — all featuring musicians who will be performing at wineries in the coming months.

Utilizing special blocks of Pinot Gris from around California, the J bottling has quickly established itself as the best-selling high-end Pinot Gris in America — and this vintage will not disappoint. Brilliant light straw color. Perfumed aromas of honeysuckle, banana essence, green pineapple, marshmallow, fresh lemon-lime and exotic tropical fruits lead to sweeter fruit impressions in the mouth. There is a rosewater unctuousness that gives way to a crisper juiciness after mid-palate. A thread of minerality adds to the complex mouthfeel. All in all, this is one delicious, user-friendly wine that’s perfect for the warm months ahead.
MSRP: $15 (May 2013)

This is Duckhorn Wine Company’s Pinot Noir flagship. In the glass, there is a deep dusty ruby color. The effusive nose pumps lots of jammy raspberry and cranberry fruit, accented by cinnamon and clove spice. Lithe on the palate, the wine shows bright red berry fruit with an underpinning of minerals and earth. Bright, sassy and nicely balanced, this is an excellent example of the cool-climate Pinot Noir wines that are produced in the Anderson Valley.

Clear medium straw color. Using select lots from the famed Sangiacomo Vineyard on the Sonoma side of Carneros, winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus has fashioned a stunning Chardonnay. The nose is pure California in expression, offering up hedonistic aromas of rich grilled pineapple, ripe peach, Meyer lemon and baked butter cake. Even with the use of 100% barrel fermentation and 60% new French oak, the vanilla, clove and butter impressions do not dominate the fruit; rather, they fill out and enhance the symphony of aromas and flavors. Each swirl, sniff and sip delivers a new layer of seduction — ripe nectarine, honeyed citrus and baked apple. Perfectly balanced and expansive on the palate, this vintage of “Envoy” ends with an afterflavor of pineapple upside-down cake that lingers for 30-plus seconds. This may be the best “Envoy” yet produced.
MSRP: $40 (May 2013)

To be sure, this is the first time I’ve seen or sampled a wine made from 100 percent Gaglioppo grape. It finds its home in the Calabrian region of Italy, which likewise is not always the first that comes to mind when one thinks of that country’s wines.

Librandi’s offering is deeply hued for a rose, but not the neon-hued style one so often dreads drinking. Based on color alone, one expects something like a funky, earthy Rosso from Sicily, but perhaps with a bit more lightness and finesse.

Alas, what’s in the glass is less exciting. There’s a waxy vanilla note, along with light spring berries and woodsy open fields. But on the whole, this is not a wine that will stir emotions or tug at heartstrings.

Wine Lines Rating: 86
MSRP: $11.99 (May 2013)

But whereas Clos Marie’s Manon white bottling shows more of a saline quality, this savoriness merely complements bold, juicy red and black fruits. Young but very drinkable now.

Nearly opaque dark ruby color. Bright mint-tinged dill and spiced tobacco aromas give way to show a solid core of black cherry and currant fruit. The wine is plush in the mouth, where the warm dark fruits take center stage. Nicely balanced and structured for cellaring for six to eight years, but why wait? It is quite enjoyable now with a brief aeration prior to serving. A century ago, Jack London wrote of his love for this vineyard that bears his name. One sip of this elixir, and you will understand why.
MSRP: $30 (May 2013)
The sweet nose shows a note of bacon fat, followed by brown sugar, vanilla and a whiff of black pepper to go with plump red berry fruits. There is a creamy chocolate quality in the mouth. The listed 15.9% alcohol is not a distraction — at least while you’re sitting down. All bets are off when you try to stand up!
