2012 Byron Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley

Pure Californian, this wine is all about fruit forwardness and concentration, sans the earthiness associated with Burgundian Pinot Noir. It has a deep, fruit-laden nose of concentrated strawberry and cherry, along with shadings of vanilla and baking spices, and whiffs of pepper and rose petal. There’s a bit of grip on the back end, which bodes well for mid-term cellaring, and the finish is smooth.
