2010 Buty ‘Rediviva of the Stones,’ Walla Walla Valley, Washington

This is a wine that sends mixed signals. A blend of Syrah (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon (31%) and Mourvedre (4%), it has a “Rhonish” aroma of smoked meat, black pepper, blackberry fruit, black plum and leather. Given that, you might expect it to be a little “rough around the edges” in the mouth — but it’s not. It’s actually quite supple, with the fruit impression leading to some unobtrusive earthy tannins and a peppery finish. Pair this cuvee with grilled gamey meats.
MSRP: $60 (December 2013)
