2011 Emmanuel Houillon (Maison Pierre Overnoy) Poulsard Arbois Pupillin, Jura, France

Overnoy, for better or worse, is in such demand (and in such little quantity) that it is virtually impossible to acquire in the U.S. without 1) a chance encounter in a handful of wine stores shortly after release 2) a dedicated source, such as a friend with connections or 3) a direct link to a distributor who is well-liked by Louis Dressner. So, imagine my delight to have had a friend decide to open a bottle “just because” — yes, this is a wine that lives up to its billing as one of the best in the Jura. Overnoy’s wines are thrilling, exciting examples of what is possible in the world of wine; they leave a deep impression. Somewhere between the color of salmon and neon pink, his Poulsard is alive with pickled rose petals, raspberries, amaro, cherry pie, grapefruit peel and freshly cut herbs. Delightful and special.
