2009 Buty ‘Columbia Rediviva,’ Phinny Hill Vineyard, Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, Washington

Lightly glass-staining opaque purple/black color. In the Columbia Valley of Washington state, each new vintage creates fresh discussion over whether Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon is the top varietal for the appellation. Buty was the first winery in the area to embrace both camps and create high-end blends of the two varietals. It has turned out to be a marriage made in Horse Heaven Hills. Initial high-toned aromatics lead to impressions of chocolate and mint, followed by a solid core of dark, fleshy fruits. The winery’s trademark smooth palate presence and refined tannins make this estate-grown cuvee enjoyable now, but it also can be aged for 10 years or more to reveal more mature aromas and flavors.
MSRP: $50 (June 2013)
