2011 Freemark Abbey Chardonnay, Napa Valley

This is Old School Napa Valley Chardonnay, done to perfection by long-time winemaker Ted Edwards. Medium straw in color, with green glints. Eschewing secondary malolactic fermentation, Edwards instead blends select lots from throughout the valley to craft a wine of nuance and breeding. Initial aromas show a balance between oak and fruit — toasted coconut, vanilla and nutmeg blend seamlessly with apple, pineapple, peach and notes of citrus. Medium-full in body, it picks up a buttery persistence that lingers on the afterflavor. This is a beautifully crafted wine that is a reminder of what first-tier Napa Valley Chardonnay can aspire to.
