2009 Cultivate Wines ‘1819’ Red Blend, Napa Valley

Produced in conjunction with the University of Virginia Alumni Association, Cultivate’s ‘1819’ looks to honor America’s first great wine connoisseur and true Renaissance man, Thomas Jefferson. It’s a blend of 78 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 22 percent Merlot grapes from the former owner and winemaking team of Screaming Eagle that hits on all the traditional Napa Valley red blend notes: abundant fruit in the nose with a medium body, ample alcohol and a furry finish. In the mouth, ripe red berries and dark plums, with delicate touches of menthol, leather and damp earth. Will please a wide audience, which one supposes is necessary when trying to sell bottles to alumni of all ages.

MSRP: $55 – 25 percent donation to the University of Virginia Alumni Association (March 2012)
Wine Lines Rating: 87
