1976 Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling, Auslese, QmP, Rheingau, Germany

Wow! It’s alive, and then some! The color was a clear, dark amber. Initial aromas included lychee nut, smoke and orange rind. With time, the fruit emerged from its slumber: baked apple, grilled peach and nectarine. Add in ghostly whiffs of pine, honey and toffee/caramel. The entry onto the palate was sublimely light, then the wine expanded after mid-palate before finishing clean. At 37 years old, this white has years ahead of it still. Amazing! (Tasted at one of the world’s top Thai restaurants, Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas, which you can read about in our “Vino Las Vagas!” archives.)
